New Pixar Renderman Releases Now Available

As the only authorised reseller of Pixar's Renderman in Australia, Storm FX is pleased to inform you that RenderMan Studio 3.0.3 and RenderMan for Maya 4.0.3 is now available on our download site. This release contains bug fixes and enhancements, as well as new support for RPS 16 features for RenderMan Studio users.  There have been no changes to licensing, so you should be able to download and go.

Hitachi Acquire BlueArc

Hitachi announced on Wednesday that it has successfully acquired U.S.-based scalable, high performance network storage firm BlueArc.

According to Hitachi, it has bought “all outstanding shares of BlueArc in an all cash transaction” without disclosing an exact amount for the purchase.

Unity astounds Flash devs with triple-A demo

Video footage shows console-quality game running in browser

Leading engine vendor Unity has released extraordinary footage of a high-end 3D game running in Flash.

The video, found here, shows a demo of Shadowgun – an upcoming iOS and Android project by Madfinger Games – running in a browser. Shadowgun, built in a similar mould as Gears of War, is a third-person action game with graphics akin to many high-end iOS titles such as Epic Games’ Infinity Blade.

Unity said ensuring that a game of this quality could run through Flash was a “major milestone”.

Oz to launch indie friendly R&D tax breaks

As much as AU$20,000 can be saved on R&D costs

The Australian government has announced a re-working of its R&D Tax Concession, now known as the R&D Tax Incentive, to benefit local developers.

MCV Pacific reports that the incentive applies to any R&D (which, for local studios could mean the creation of new technology and game engines during the early phases of a game's development) occurring after 1st July 2011.
